Dr. Eugene T. W. Sanders is the Chief Executive Officer and Superintendent for the Sandusky City Schools in Sandusky, Ohio. He is a recognized national leader in transformation, organizational development and leadership. He received his Bachelor’s degree in Comprehensive Social Studies, Master’s Degree in Educational Administration and Supervision, Master’s Degree in Secondary Education, and Ph.D. in Educational Administration and Supervision and Organizational Management from Bowling Green State University. Dr. Sanders is a former teacher at Sandusky High School, high school administrator, tenured college professor, consultant, and served as CEO for both the Cleveland Metropolitan School District and the Toledo Public Schools. Dr. Sanders also served as an Executive Lecturer at The University of Hawaii at Maui College. Dr. Sanders has been recognized as Superintendent of the Year by the Martha Holden Jennings Foundation and received numerous awards and recognition for exemplary leadership.

Dr. Sanders introduced the concept of organizational transformation to the Board of Education in the spring of 2013, and with the support of the faculty, staff, parents, and leaders in the Sandusky community, launched the Sandusky City Schools Transformation Plan in March 2014. The Transformation Plan has been viewed as the boldest and most comprehensive school redesign and organizational plan in the recent history of our schools. The plan has introduced several key innovative school initiatives including the Regional Center for Advanced Academic Studies, (the only full time gifted school in our region), and the Sandusky Digital Academy, focused on online and 21st century learning modalities. The district was also successful in securing a 1 Million dollar donation to support both gifted education and preschool educational programming from the Dorn Foundation. The district will implement the Global Internship Program, which will require graduating seniors to experience the impact of globalization on their college and career choices.

Dr. Sanders has a history of developing innovative school plans. During his tenure as CEO of the Cleveland Schools, Dr. Sanders introduced and implemented several national school design models, including Mc2 STEM High Schools, the only school in America located on the campus of a fortune 500 company, the Science and Medicine High School, the Architectural Design and Engineering High School in partnership with the Cleveland Clinic, Campus International IB School in partnership with Cleveland State University.

Dr. Sanders is a proud graduate of Sandusky High School and active in his church. He is a member of the Sandusky Boys and Girls Club, Sandusky Rotary Club, and served on the Board of Directors for the Firelands Regional Medical Center. He was inducted into the Sandusky High School and Erie County Hall of Achievers in recognition for his accomplishments in school leadership. He is the son of the late American Sanders Sr., and Lena M. Sanders. He is one of eleven children; all are graduates of Sandusky High School. He credits his success to family, faith, and school community.
